89th Annual Juried Student Art Show Process Materials

Problem

The 89th Annual Juried Student Art Show at Ball State University needed a unique, engaging, and fun theme that would pique student interest and communicate vital information. The School of Art is an eclectic and varied group, with (at the time) 14 majors and many more concentrations. Every student, regardless of department, needed to feel represented and included.

Solution

After many sessions of ideation and deliberation within my Studio 165+ team, we decided to represent each major using animals. An energetic and lively hummingbird represents Animation, a wise owl as Art History, a sharp-toothed and determined beaver as Sculpture, and so on. Each animal operates within its natural habitat but all are connected via a central pathway, just as each student overlaps with each adjacent field of study.
